The C-Class models available today are the third
generation of Mercedes-Benz compact saloons. Their famous predecessor
is the Mercedes-Benz 190, which in the ten years from its inception
in 1983 proved consistently popular. The design was overhauled in
1993, when the C-Class was introduced, which improved on the safety,
handling and comfort standards set by the 190. Innovations included
the world's first 4-valve diesel engine, airbags, and a new front-axle
concept. The third generation C-Class Saloon won Mercedes-Benz a
five-star NCAP rating, redesigned the exterior completely and greatly
broadened the rangeof features.
